Jailbreaking To Become Illegal Once Again! [YOU Need To Take Action]

July of 2010 was a proud day for the Jailbreaking Community, as the United States government ruled in favour of making Jailbreaking and Unlocking Mobile devices legal (adding an exemption to the DMCA). The only restriction to this new law, put in place to make Jailbreaking legal, was that it could not be carried out for an intention of breaking copyright laws (IE: for the sole purpose of cracked applications). From this day forward Jailbreakers everywhere have had the peace of mind that Jailbreaking their iOS or even Android device was a legal act.

The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has now pointed out, however, that the Jailbreaking exemption to the DMCA put in place during 2012 is set to expire this year! Thus, it is time for all supporters of Jailbreaking to take action so we can renew this exemption and add support to make Jailbreaking tablets and even video games consoles legal in the United States.

So how can you take action? Well, as the EFF points out, Copyright Office needs to hear from people who depend on the ability to jailbreak to write, use, and/or tinker with independent software (from useful apps to essential security fixes) for smartphones, tablets, and game consoles. If you would like to help make Jailbreaking legal once again in the United States and add support for tablets and consoles, you need to submit your comments by filling out an online form by clicking here.

The EFF has included some quick questions you may want to address:

Quote

Which jailbreaking exemption are you supporting—smartphones/tablets, video game consoles, or both?
  • What’s your background (i.e., are you a developer, hobbyist, academic, independent researcher, user, etc.)?
  • What device do you want to ensure you have the legal authority to jailbreak?
  • Please explain why you want to jailbreak this device. What limitations do you face if you aren’t able to jailbreak it? Is there software you couldn’t run, computing capabilities you wouldn’t have, cool things you couldn’t do, etc.?
  • If you’re a developer, did an online application store or console manufacturer reject your app or game? If so, what reasons did they give?
  • Is there anything else you want to tell the Copyright Office?

Note: Where the form says “Comment number(s) of proposed classes of works to which you are responding,” enter a “3” if you’re writing about game consoles or a “5” if you’re writing about smartphones or tablets.

We hope that anyone who Jailbreaks their iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device will take 5-10 minutes out of your day to help preserve something that millions of people enjoy.

Did you help the EFF preserve Jailbreaking? Leave your responses in the comments section below…

FileServe, Filesonic, Upload. To shutters in light of file-sharing site crackdown

Summary: With Megaupload now defunct and shut down by U.S. authorities, more file-sharing sites, including FileSonic and now FileServe, are shutting down their services to limit potential fallout.

FileServe is the latest high profile file-sharing site to effectively pull the plug on its own service, by disallowing all downloads except those “that you have uploaded personally”.

The company has not made any official comment. It comes less than 24 hours since similar file-sharing site FileSonic disabled its service, only allowing users to download content that they have uploaded themselves.

It is thought that FileServe follows FileSonic and other sites in response to the wider crackdown on file-sharing sites by U.S. authorities.

Reddit brought to light the sudden move by FileServe, which currently holds as the 132nd most popular site on the Web, according to Internet traffic analytics firm Alexa.

Many other file hosting websites have closed their affiliate programs, which allows users to generate revenue based on the number of downloads clicked per uploaded file.

Sites like FileServe can be a hotbed for hosting illegally uploaded copyrighted material, such as television shows and films, to allow users to make a quick buck or two by sharing the links with online forums. ZDNet’s Stephen Chapman explained how in an article last year.

Online forums and link-sharing sites allow users to submit not only their torrent files for peer-to-peer sharing, but operate on an open-comment system. This gives community users the ability to leave comments that include links to file-sharing sites, such as FileServe, RapidShare and the now defunct Megaupload.

As many other file-sharing sites are closing their sites and affiliate links, others are taking the drastic measure by deleting entire swathes of accounts and files stored on their servers. Others like Uploaded.to are taking to blocking IP addresses from the United States to mitigate any future potential damage.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Particularly the wild story about how the file-sharing website's founder was arrested in high fashion. Well, this has all clearly spooked other file-sharing services, including FileSonic. If you go to its homepage, you're greeted by a message that reads: "All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally." Not only that, but Uploaded.to is no longer available for use in the U.S.

Wow. Do you think anyone else will fold in light of the ongoing witch hunt? And could a major player like Mediafire go under?

Dev Team Releases CLI Jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2

As promised, the infamous Dev Team has just released its CLI jailbreak which is compatible with both the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2. It’s still for Mac users only, but it does provide an alternative to the Absinthe app.

We must warn you though that this isn’t your typical jailbreak software. CLI stands for Command Line Interface, meaning using it isn’t as easy as clicking the “jailbreak” button. It’s definitely not for the feint of heart…

Here’s how the Dev Team describes its CLI app:

“The OS X version of the CLI mentioned in the post can be downloaded here. It’s primarily to help us debug specific issues, but tinkerers might like to play around with some of its advanced options!”

So essentially, the majority of users should stay with Absinthe or wait for the Dev Team to release a new version of RedSn0w. If you’re really interested in trying CLI, stay tuned for our step-by-step guide on how to use it.
